When Brazil Meets Friesland: A Journey Between Two Worlds

There are encounters that go beyond a meeting. They carry history, emotion and the power to connect two worlds that, at first glance, seem far apart.

This week, a remarkable Brazilian-Frisian story unfolded in the Netherlands.

From São Paulo, the internationally recognised Friesian Haras Barock travelled to Friesland the province where Osmin Carlson, known in the Netherlands as Carlos Hogendorp, grew up after being adopted from Brazil. Born in São Paulo himself, Osmin’s life has always carried a unique connection between Brazil and the Netherlands.

And perhaps nowhere is that connection more symbolic than in Friesland.

As a child, Osmin grew up surrounded by the majestic Friesian horses that have become one of the Netherlands’ most recognisable symbols around the world. Now, years later, Brazilian horse breeders travelled thousands of kilometres to the very fields where he once stood as a child watching those same horses.

Together with Roberto from Friesian Haras Barock, Osmin visited his neighbour, Pieter Wijbinga a breeder with an international reputation, who once sold a Friesian horse that appeared in the film Zorro. What was once simply part of Osmin’s childhood landscape suddenly became the setting for a new connection with Brazil.

And that is perhaps what makes this encounter so powerful.

Brazil came to Friesland and Friesland opened its doors.

The story also carries a wider message: the Netherlands is much more than Amsterdam. Beyond the capital lies Friesland, a province with its own language, its own history and a deeply rooted cultural identity and, of course, the world-famous Friesian horse.

For Brazilian visitors, this is more than tourism. It is an invitation to discover another side of the Netherlands: quieter, authentic and deeply connected to tradition.

Because when Brazilians come together, something happens.

Connections are made. Stories begin. And sometimes, a single meeting can open the door to many more.

What happened in Friesland may therefore be more than a beautiful moment between horse lovers. It may be the beginning of a bridge between São Paulo and Friesland between Brazil and the Netherlands.

And perhaps the next Brazilian traveller will not only dream of Amsterdam.

Perhaps they will dream of Friesland.
